THE HOLY MOUNTAINS- THE LOURDES CHAPEL
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Sacral objects
On the top of the ridge is a small chapel, initially dedicated to St. Bolfenk, but later, from 1893 on, it was dedicated to the Mother of God of Lourdes. It is the ‘youngest’ of buildings, built ‘just recently’ in 1518.
The inside of the nave is horizontally covered with wooden ceiling. The walls of the nave have once been covered by scenes from the Passion, this was around 1600. Among the preserved we can distinguish Jesus’s ceremonial entrance into Jerusalem, the Last supper, scenes of flogging, crucifying and resurrection from the grave. Depicted above the entrance is the peak of Last Judgement and on the left a fragment of birth. On the side by the entrance is a bust of a nobleman, most likely a donator, in a fashionable outfit with a ‘millstone collar’ and the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck. The chapel has a rectangular nave, a presbytery concluded from three sides and a small tower on the roof. Today, the church also possesses images of gratitude left there by the worshipers in appreciation to their prayers and intercessions being answered.
