THE KARSTIC SPRING “DAVJEK”, DEKMANCA
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Natural heritage
An example of karstic influence and processes is the “Davjek” spring in Dekmanca. The spring was formed at the contact point where the limestone slope meets the surrounding plains consisting of impermeable marlstone. The spring in a shallow basin, next to a steep slope, continues into a creek where there’s another water spring. The water of the latter is perfectly safe to drink.
The “Davjek” spring is located by a small fracture in the limestone, dating back to Miocene*. The basin measures 10 m in length, 8 m in width while the spring itself has a diameter of 1 m. The temperature of the water spring is 16° C. The creek flows into the river Sotla. High fluctuations in flow-rate and occasional turbidity in times of high water are the features typical for the »Davjek« spring, as well as other karstic springs.
*Miocene is a geological period in the course of Earth’s development, which began around 23 million years ago and ended 5,33 million years ago.
