ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JOSIP BROZ IN KUMROVEC
Location: Kumrovec
Category: Architectural and ethnological heritage
In 1956, the students first attended, instead of two old school buildings, newly built school. The initiative started from Josip Broz Tito and in record time, the most modern school in Yugoslavia, designed by Croatian architect Neven Šegvić was built. Located in a spacious school park, away from any noise it was a perfect place for such a facility. The first generation had allot of problems in getting used to this kind of space and the use of all modern things that until then had never even seen, let alone use. For example: indoor gym with changing rooms and showers, outdoor handball court, workshops, a library, a school kitchen etc. Also it was a great challenge for teachers and support staff as well as for them it was all new and unknown. Operating conditions were almost perfect for that time. Classes were held in especially equipped classrooms, and there ware possibilities for allot of extracurricular activities. In the eighties the space in front of the school was used as a mini school ZOO. The first inhabitants were dears, and later rabbits and swans which still every morning joyfully welcome, especially the smallest students. Today in school is enrolled little more than 150 students and it employs about teachers and support staff.
