THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS, PLES
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Sacral objects
Right by the Croatian border, in the village of Ples, ascends a hill over the river Sotla, called Vina gora with an affiliate church of the Holy Cross. The church originates from 1607, which is evident from the year inscription on the lintel of the side portal. It has a rectangular nave and a vaulted presbytery completed from three sides, next to which is a shack and a sacristy. The nave has acquired its current look thorough multiple renovations.
Most likely, the vault was added in the 18th century, and was later extended in length in the 2nd half of the 19th century, when a bell-tower was also added. The central part of the presbytery is a big altar. The church is complemented by the side altar of St. Urban, a pulpit and an organ from the end of 19th century.
Masses are given in the church only twice a year, first for the Ascension holiday and secondly in November for Thanksgiving Day.
